DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE

Overview:

The periodontium is the supporting tissue of the teeth which includes gum, periodontal ligaments, and the alveolar bone. Any disease affecting the aforementioned tissues is termed periodontal disease.

Investigation

  • Periapical radiograph
  • Bite wing
  • Determining depth of pocket with periodontal probe
  • Fasting blood sugar
  • Full blood count

Diagnosis

Periodontal disease or gum disease is diagnosed as follows;

  • Chronic marginal gingivitis
  • Aggressive periodontitis
  • Juvenile periodontitis
  • Herpetic gingivostomatitis
  • Localized periodontitis
  • Pericoronitis
  • Tooth mobility
  • Periodontal abscess

Treatment

The treatment modality is planned toward the cause of periodontal disease. However, there are treatment directed toward the oral symptoms like bleeding gum, pocketing, tartar accumulation etc. The oral symptoms treatment are;

  • Scaling and polishing
  • Root planning
  • Pocket debridement
  • Curretage and gum treatment
  • Splinting
  • Periodontal dressing
  • Operculectomy
  • Gingivectomy
  • Tissue guided regeneration
